2017 NAIFA Annual Conference
May 23-24th Washington D.C.
About 700 NAIFA members from all 50-state descended on D.C. for the annual Congressional Conference. I’m proud to say that Fort Wayne Chapter had 7 members who participated in this crucial lobbying event. I was impressed on how well received we were with the Indiana Congressional delegation. They listened to our views on how legislation and regulations affect our clients and our Industry. Key topics discussed; Labor Department fiduciary rule, tax reform, and health care reform. They understand the urgency of solving these issues.
Joining me were these NAIFA leaders with Dave Knuth, Rudy Mahara Sr. Rudy Mahara ll, Gary Leman, Aaron Moore, Jeff Bauermeister, and Jeremy Stackhouse attending. All thought this was a worthwhile event.

In case you missed it, this is the NAIFA announcement that the DOL Fiduciary rule is going to be delayed and reviewed. This is a big deal.
Administration To Review The DOL Fiduciary Rule
President Donald Trump has issued a memorandum instructing the Department of Labor to review its implementation of the “Conflict of Interest Rule,” also known as the fiduciary rule. The memo further orders the department to undertake a thorough “economic and legal analysis” of the rule.
The National Association of Insurance and Financial Advisors (NAIFA) views the administration’s action as a crucial first step in ensuring that the DOL rule does not harm Americans preparing for retirement.
“It makes perfect sense for the administration to delay implementation of the Department of Labor fiduciary rule,” said NAIFA President Paul Dougherty. “Compliance deadlines imposed by the rule are quickly approaching, so it would make little sense to keep advisors, financial institutions and their clients in limbo while the administration undertakes its thorough review of the rule.”
“NAIFA has expressed a number of concerns about the rule, which would impose burdensome and costly restrictions and requirements on advisors and would limit middle- and lower-income retirement savers’ access to services and advice,” Dougherty added. “We look forward to offering the administration any information or assistance they may require as they review the rule.”
The presidential memo instructs the DOL to “examine the Fiduciary Rule to determine whether it may adversely affect the ability of Americans to gain access to retirement information and financial advice.” The memo cites specific concerns NAIFA has repeatedly raised about the rule: that it could add to advisors’ legal liability, increase clients’ costs for advice and services, and severely limit middle-market consumers’ access to retirement services.
“Insurance and financial advisors act in their clients’ best interests every day, and a big part of that is helping them prepare for retirement,” said NAIFA CEO Kevin Mayeux. “NAIFA has utilized all three branches of government – from educating executive branch regulators to working with members of Congress to joining a lawsuit with the American Council of Life Insurers challenging the rule – to ensure the rule doesn’t harm low- and middle-income investors. The fiduciary rule will remain a top priority for NAIFA as our members continue to help every-day Americans save and build financial security.”
Our NAIFA national leadership is protecting our interest and our clients. This is proof of it. Our involvement in NAIFA is making these changes a reality.
Please consider getting involved attending our February members meeting and our Lobbying in Indy on March 8th. It is fun being with fellow members and visiting with your Legislative leaders. I look forward to seeing you! Have a productive Month!!!
Happy 2017! This message comes at a time when some of you are returning from restful holiday vacations. One of our members just yesterday told me he is coming home to Fort Wayne –escaping from the Florida heat and sun!

Also, important Congressional action is in process for two crucial issues to our industry: Obama Care and DOL new regulations. Both issues will be changed/adjusted with the Trump administration and Republican controlled Congress. I will be making the D.C. Congressional visit this May, along with several other NAIFA members to represent our clients interests.
Recent DOL development:
This will be a year of change for the Affordable Care Act and DOL. NAIFA will be representing you and keeping you informed on these changes and what we can do to assist positive change. Our profession and our clients demand the current health insurance system be changed, and that the DOL regulation be modified so as to maintain proper client care and preserve needed industry jobs.
I look forward seeing you at the Wine Taster to benefit Erin’s House, and at the February 16th NAIFA meeting. The topic will be: “Our Political efforts to protect our industry and clients”.
Remember: NAIFA webinars and website resources are in place to help grow your business. Access them to make 2017 your most prosperous year!
Many in our Profession are relieved by the election of President Elect Trump and the Republican Congress. We had 8 years of leadership that hurt our Insurance Industry and did not understand the Free Enterprise system. I wanted to share our national NAIFA statement about the election.
NAIFA Statement On 2016 Election Results
The National Association of Insurance and Financial Advisors is committed to working with the newly elected Trump administration and members of the 115th Congress as it continues to advocate for a positive legislative and regulatory environment for insurance and financial advisors and their clients.
Congress and the administration will be responsible for a number of decisions and actions that will impact NAIFA members and their clients, including potential revision or repeal of the Department of Labor fiduciary rule, and the Affordable Care Act, and consideration of tax reform proposals.
“NAIFA and our members possess a profound expertise on insurance and financial matters,” said NAIFA President Paul Dougherty. “That makes us the ideal association to educate Congress and regulators about the real-life effects of their decisions on people who are preparing for retirement, running small businesses, managing health- and disability-related risks, and protecting the long-term financial security of their families.”
Along with the other representatives and senators elected yesterday, former Congressman and NAIFA member Brad Schneider will return to Congress to represent the tenth district of Illinois. NAIFA also would like to congratulate Al Lawson, who will represent Florida’s fifth district in the House of Representatives. Currently a state senator, Lawson has been an agent with Northwestern Mutual Financial Network since 1976, and has been a long-time NAIFA member.
Year End IFAPAC Drive
This December I ask our members to further our political agenda by contributing to our IFAPAC. You will be getting calls encouraging you to support our Industry. Our lobby efforts have yielded huge results for us and our Profession.
D. Scott Brennan, December 15th Speaker
Please reward yourself by attending our Thursday, December 15th members meeting at Hotel Fort Wayne. Inspiring past MDRT President and 2016 John Russell award winner Scott Brennan will be our speaker. Scott speech will encourage you and his wisdom will assist your career. We are most fortunate that Scott Brannan will join us and motivate us during our end of year special. I look forward to seeing you at this memorable meeting.
Have a Bless Christmas season and Happy New Year. Remember you are protecting families and businesses futures and making life changing differences by your involvement in their lives. We have a wonderful Profession!
NAIFA Fort Wayne,
Wake up America!
Wow what a crazy Presidential election we are all going through. Can the stakes be any higher? Clinton represents keeping the Obama era continuing (not friendly to the Insurance and Financial Services industry) and Trump the agent of change (Offering Obamacare elimination, less regulation and traditional values). In a couple of day’s the American people will have spoken. Please attend our November 17th members meeting which we will discuss the election and what NAIFA projects for our future.
Also, we will have at our Thursday members meeting at Hotel Fort Wayne at 8 AM speaker on “Train your Brain to Focus, establish positive patterns & success” in your career. This will be a useful presentation to assist with your business.
Please vote and pray for our Nation with this upcoming election. Whoever is elected for President and Congress will influence our industry and business. We all hope it will be positive for our nation’s economic growth and dealing with our many problems in our Insurance and Financial Services Industry.
Look forward seeing you at our Thursday, November 18th meeting at Hotel Fort Wayne at 8 AM. Please invite a future new member.

A truly amazing agent with much to share to inspire and encourage us all to do better in our own careers! I encourage not only our new agents, but all agents to hear Gary’s story. Greetings, Fort Wayne NAIFA members!
I hope this message finds you enjoying the summer and recharging your batteries with some well deserved vacation time. Every July our NAIFA Board has a changing of the guard, and I’m honored to be your President for the next NAIFA year. I want to thank the retiring members of last year’s Board: Neil Bryson (a dedicated insurance industry veteran) Melissa Satterthwaite (completed our extensive BOBO Award forms with her joyful personality) Arlene Stutzman (always added great advice and positive energy) and Dan Doehrmann (everyone’s favorite Board member, and now, special new Advisor to ME, the President!) We applaud these NAIFA members for representing what is best about NAIFA. Also, we thank last year’s President Lee McAllister, for doing a superb job working with the Board and leading us to our much anticipated 4th BOBO award. Lee did a great job representing our membership and enhancing our program.
“SWP: Significance with Purpose”
Our new Board met on Friday, June 17th at University of Saint Francis Pope John Paul II Business Building. Dean Bob Lee welcomed the Board to Campus. Dean informed us about the first and only Northern Indiana University offering a Bachelor’s Degree in “Risk Management & Insurance.” This program will include many students looking to intern with NAIFA member businesses. We are excited that USF is creating insurance industry opportunities for young people!
The Board has decided on “Significance with Purpose” as our theme for 2016-17, because this is what NAIFA is all about. NAIFA is significant to our profession and our future, protecting our interests in Washington, DC and Indianapolis. For example, NAIFA was active with the DOL decision and reduced the severity of these changes. NAIFA is holding DOL workshops and Webinars, educating us on these changes. Significancebecause we offer CE courses and inspiring monthly meetings with speakers that help us to build our individual practices. Significance by sponsoring charitable efforts like Erin’s House for Grieving Children. The NAIFA YAT program provides mentoring support for young agents/advisors entering our exciting profession. As a matter of fact, of the 13 members serving on the new Board, we have 6 under age 40. We have an exceptional Board this year.
I encourage all our members to attend our monthly meetings which start in September. I promise you they will be educational and exciting. Our September meeting will be on “Life Insurance Awareness” month. The miracle of Life Insurance will be discussed as well as useful tools for protecting families and businesses. The Board will work to keep you informed and involved with educational and social events, mentoring, political advocacy, and charities like Erin’s House.
You can be proud of your membership in the NAIFA/Fort Wayne Chapter. Remember our “Significance with Purpose.” God bless, enjoy the rest of summer, and I look forward seeing you at our September 15th NAIFA meeting.
Hello NAIFA Fort Wayne!!
Welcome to SUMMER!!!! YEA!!!! It sure took it’s time arriving, but arrive it did. I am sure all of us are looking forward to long days, short nights, and well-deserved vacations. I cannot believe it has been a year since I took over the reins from Dave Knuth, and what a year it has been!
We here in Fort Wayne are blessed with talent, so much talent, and that is what sustained my time as President. Your Board of Directors are as fine a group of people as I have ever been associated with in my entire life. It was a pleasure to sit in the chair and hang on as they charged forward with their ideas, their commitment to success, and ultimately their desire for action! This is not a complacent board, but rather one that looks for solutions, demands accountability from all levels, and then implements the PLAN with VIGOR.
You all can count on that next year too. Although a significant amount of that talent is leaving, an even more significant bunch is coming on to serve. We don’t rebuild in Fort Wayne, we RELOAD. Make no mistake, the times are perilous for some of us with the recent DOL regulations going into force next April. We will be here to guide each other through it. We will have several significant general membership meetings next year, plenty of CE as well. John Becker and his crew are well-positioned to succeed, and succeed they will.
As I said at the VERY successful Advisor of the Year dinner, I just want to thank all of you for allowing me to serve you. I want to thank my board, for being such great, supportive friends and true professionals. It has been a pleasure meeting with you on the 1st Thursday of the month. A meeting I always looked forward to. Thank you to all of the members who helped make our general meetings so vibrant! What a wonderful year. See you at the Sales Summit June 7-8 at the Oakwood Resort in Syracuse to finish it out!
God Bless You All!
Hello NAIFA Fort Wayne! April is here! Spring is here!! Where did the time go? We were blessed with a mild winter, which for most of us is a good thing. Oh sure, the skiers and ice fisherman got the short end, but after the last two years, it was due to even out, right?
April is a BIG month for us here as members of NAIFA Fort Wayne. We have the SUPER CE day on April 28, where you can receive 8 hours of CE in one day, share time with your peers, eat right on site and they have coffee all day as well! Please see the link on this page for more information. Also, if it is April, that means only one more month until our big finale in May. This year our Advisor of the Year meeting promises to be huge.I’ll have more information for you on that next month. We have several board openings for next year as well. Please consider how you might help your peers in a position of leadership on the NAIFA Fort Wayne Board next year. More information to follow next month. Until then, ENJOY SPRING!!
Hello NAIFA Fort Wayne!
Spring is in the air! At least, as I write this, they tell me it is going to be a warm, sunny and beautiful weekend! Hopefully that is true.
It has been a rough month in February. We lost a true Champion of NAIFA in Al Cyr. His love for the organization was special and his contribution both financially and especially in the time he devoted to it is unsurpassed in this chapter. He will be truly missed on so many levels. Fair winds and following seas, Marine.
On the flip side, we had a very successful Day on the Hill on Tuesday February 16. We had 18 on the bus trip down to the Capitol where we met with legislators such as Martin Carbaugh, Casey Cox, Jim Banks and Dennis Kruse, along with State Senator Liz Brown. Once again they made sure to let us know how important face time is to them and they are not shy in asking us our opinions. I cannot overstate the importance of meeting with these fine folks who write the laws. If we don’t educate them about the far reach of the Law of Unintended Consequences, bad stuff happens and we just can’t let that be.
We look forward to seeing you at the March meeting. We are going to have a fascinating speaker from the fine folks at Paul Davis Restoration. They are going to talk about their restoration process from fire damage and it is a show you will not want to miss! See you there!!
Hello NAIFA Fort Wayne!
Welcome to February 2016! It seems as though winter has arrived in some form, though it certainly hasn’t been anything like the last two years. We can thank El Nino for the relatively warm temperatures and lack of snow in our region. I can’t say I’m complaining too much!
On January 21st we held our regular monthly meeting at Country Heritage Winery, and it was a fantastic evening. Everyone who attended tells me what a wonderful time they had, socializing with each other and raising money for a very worthy cause-Erin’s House, our chosen charity. We raised $2110 for Erin’s House that night due to everyone in attendance and 2 very special individuals who matched the night’s donation with $500 each! Thank both of you very much, and I am so happy we had so many people in attendance that we could reach your match requirements. What a great night indeed. Due to the success of this program, we will look at doing more of these in the future.
For February’s meeting, we will have a primer on Social Security and the changes that have been made which may limit certain strategies for maximizing income. Also this month, on February 16 is our Indiana Day on the Hill. We have little room left on the bus, so time is short to claim your space…and you don’t want to miss this!! There is strength in numbers. Be a part of it.
Hello NAIFA Fort Wayne!
Happy New Year! I wish everyone a Blessed and successful 2016! Certainly this past year has been eventful for many of us. For us as a Chapter, your board continues to be very active in support of the industry as well as in support of your careers. From the DOL foolishness to the Day on The Hill connecting with our legislators, we have tried to impact those whose actions impact us and our clients. We remain the Vanguard against ignorance, or worse, malfeasance. And we ask YOU to stay involved as well. Your careers depend on it.
On a lighter note, we are going to try something new in January. In place of our regular meeting, please join us on Thursday, January 21st from 6-8PM at the Country Heritage Winery off State Road 3 North for a wine-tasting and social event in support of Erin’s House for Grieving Children, our chosen charity. The cost is $25 per person, with $20 going to Erin’s house, and the remainder to cover our expenses. This is a true fundraiser and hopefully will help break up the winter doldrums a bit as well.
Thank You all for your support in 2015 and I look forward to continuing to serve you as best I can. We have a wonderful team here in Fort Wayne. I am proud to work alongside you and to call you my friends. God Bless and again, Happy New Year. Be safe out there.
Hello NAIFA Fort Wayne!
December is here. Let me repeat that-December is here. Did this year fly by or is it just me? It really seems as though the rains of spring just stopped falling, there were about 2 minutes of summer, and then fall came and went. And it even snowed 5 inches already. Someone once told me that the seasons build character. Who am I to argue with that?
This time of year is especially poignant, a time of reflection, a time of thanks, a time for gifts and gift-giving. Please consider giving as much as you can to your favorite charities, or your favored people. It is this time of year that the need overwhelms the capacity to provide for those in need, and it’s a challenge that cannot be met without YOU. Please help in whatever ways you can. YOU truly make a difference, whether it be in Time, Talent, or Treasures. Thank You.
December’s meeting will be about being a member and membership benefits. We will pass out the NAIFA quality awards (you must be present to win-just kidding) and then answer the question “What’s in it for me?” Here you will learn the many facets of membership to enhance your practice from a PRACTICAL point of view, tangible and multifaceted items that you can use to help you do more for your clients and ultimately for you.
I guarantee you will learn at least one thing that will help you earn a solid return on your investment with NAIFA if you utilize the things we have available to us from National and State. I look forward to seeing you on the 17th. If you are unable to join us, please have a very Merry and Blessed Christmas!!
Hello Fort Wayne NAIFA!
As I write this the leaves are well into their season of change. The Colts are having issues on the football field and politics is heating up as usual. The election season is upon us and I encourage all of you to get out and vote on Election Day, Tuesday November 3. Turnout is expected to be minimal, therefore you have the opportunity to make your vote count even more! Please exercise your constitutional right so many have died to preserve!
November is Long Term Care month. At our general membership meeting, we are going to offer 1 CE for attending the meeting. We will hear about Long Term Care issues and we will be educated on some of the interesting changes that have occurred in the last 12 months. If you are not talking Long Term Care with your clients, perhaps this meeting will give you some reasons to start.
As always, your board thanks you for your input and attendance. We have so many new faces at these meetings; it is very heartening to see. Come on out and join us on November 19th and see for yourself the difference you are making. And Happy Thanksgiving!!
Hello NAIFA Fort Wayne and welcome to October and the Fall season!
Fall is a season of change, and if there is one thing we know for sure in our industry, it is that change is a constant: things happen so fast in our industry that we need a support team to help us through it all. Many times that support team is the home office, where a group of very talented people are there to help you with products and solutions to meet the ever-changing environment. NAIFA Fort Wayne, as a chapter of NAIFA National, is also here with a group of very talented individuals-EACH OTHER-to help guide you in your practice and bring awareness often times much more quickly than even our home offices do. Whether it is regulatory in Nature, as is the DOL Fiduciary rules, or compliance, education and product related, NAIFA has a group of extremely helpful people and tools to bring you assistance in your time of need. Please come to our meeting on Thursday October 15 to learn from and to serve each other in our profession!
See you there!
Wow, summer is almost over. I am not sure where it went, but with the torrential record-breaking rains of June, I am glad we got at least two months of normal, comfortable summer weather in July and August.
With that being said, your 2015-2016 Board is ready to dive headlong into the Membership meetings, commencing on Thursday September 17th. As most of you know, September is Life Insurance Awareness month, and our meeting is going to be geared toward hearing testimonies from people whose lives have been impacted by Life Insurance. We will want to hear stories from you too, because those of us who have been in this business long enough have much to share with our peers.
I find that this meeting puts life in perspective, both business and family-wise. It reaffirms my commitment to serving others, it gives me the motivation to carry on through the tough times and endure. When you deliver that first substantial life insurance check from a policy that you have written, and know that YOU made THE difference in the future of a family, there is no other feeling like that. We have great responsibility, my friends.
Come and be lifted up in September. I’m looking forward to seeing you all very soon.
Hello Northeast Indiana NAIFA!
YOU are NAIFA. We may be members, but truly it is YOU who make the difference. And what a difference YOU have been making.
I would like to especially acknowledge our Property and Casualty brothers and sisters. Since I last wrote a note, we have had major weather issues here in the region. We have had windstorms with severe damage, rain that until just recently refused to stop falling, hail, lighting and general havoc.
Who takes care of the mess when the storm is over? Who is literally the lifeline of many, many families who have been devastated by the storm’s relentless attack? Who provides the incredible words of hope “YOU ARE COVERED, and I’ll take care of it”?
Look around you at the September meeting. There you will see those lifelines in person, those who go to work every day with the purpose of helping turn disaster into something less so. YOU make the difference!
Enjoy August everyone. The fall is rapidly approaching and your board is gearing up to provide you with the tools you must have to be successful in our vocation. Enjoy this dry(er) weather and enjoy the rest of your summer.
Be safe, be thankful, and as always, be strong.
I want to take this opportunity to thank all of you who attended the Advisor of the Year dinner and took the time to elect your 2015-2016 Board of Directors. As President, I am looking forward to working with such a wonderful group of your peers. We are committed to doing the very best job we can do for you and your clients this year, and at our planning meeting on June 19th we designed what we feel will be an exciting, meaningful, and purposeful calendar of meetings.
We have many, many challenges ahead, individually, industry-wise and career-wise.. We will be tested on many levels, and your participation will be crucial to the strength and meaningfulness of our organization.
Please pay close attention to the NAIFA Governmental and Legislative bulletins being sent from State and National. There are things happening in regards to the Department of Labor proposed Fiduciary regulations that will demand your input. I urge all of you to please stay engaged.
That being said, IT IS SUMMER. I think I speak for the Board when I wish you all a SAFE, HAPPY and HEALTHY SUMMER to all of you and your families.
Until Next Time,
